What Are They?

An electronic cigarette is an electronic device that vaporizes a liquid solution to create an alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. FreE-Cigs models are available in two and three-piece systems which consist of a rechargeable battery and a cartomizer, or a rechargeable battery with a separate atomizer and cartridge. The cartomizer in the two-piece systems is a cartridge with a coil built in that heats up the E-Liquid of your choosing.  The three-piece systems separate the cartomizer into two pieces, an atomizer and cartridge, where the atomizer is the heating element and the cartridge holds your E-Liquid of choice.

Glossary of Terms & Vaping Lingo

Analog: The name given to traditional tobacco cigarettes by those who now use an electronic cigarette. If the e-cig is the electronic version…..the tobacco version is the analog.

Battery (Batt): Rechargeable lithium battery used to power Electronic CigarettesBatteries generally have an LED indicator (various colors) on the tip that mimics the fire on a traditional cigarette.  Modified E-Cigs (Mods) do not typically feature an LED indicator and consist of one, or multiple batteries that are removed from the mod's casing/compartment for recharging purposes.

Automatic Battery: Automatic batteries are operated by taking a drag like you would on a traditional cigarette. When a drag is taken the battery is activated and the liquid in the cartridge is vaporized.

Manual Battery: Manual batteries are operated by pushing a button located on the battery shaft. When the button is pressed the battery is activated and the liquid in the cartridge is vaporized.

E-Liquid (Juice): Liquid used to refill cartridges and cartomizers.  E-Liquid is available in many different flavors and strengths, but is also available without nicotine.  All our cartridges and cartomizers are refillable.  Using E-Liquid to refill cartridges and cartomizers is cheaper than using pre-filled versions. Pre-filled cartomizers and cartridges can be refilled with the same, or different flavor liquid.  It is recommended that you replace cartomizers after refilling them about 6 times as the batting and atomizer break down over time, resulting in poor performance.  When switching flavors, we recommend cleaning your cartomizer(s) and allowing to air dry (See Quick Tips for cleaning instructions).

Atomizer (Atty): Atomizes the E-Liquid to create vapor. Atomizers screw into the battery and attach to a cartridge containing E-Liquid. Only 3 piece systems contain a separate atomizer.  2 piece systems utilize a cartomizer that combines the atomizer and cartridge into one piece.

Cartridge (Cart): Contains flavored E-Liquid used to create vapor.  All cartridges can be refilled with E-Liquid, but it is recommended they be cleaned regularly.  See our Quick Tips section for instructions on how to do so.

Cartomizer (Carto): Contains the flavored E-Liquid used to create vapor and a built in atomizer.  A cartomizer combines the atomizer and cartridge into one piece, eliminating the need for a separate atomizer and cartridge.  All cartomizers can be refilled with E-Liquid, but it is recommended that they be replaced after 6 refills or so and cleaned regularly
(See Quick Tips for refilling instructions).

Mod: A design variation of a normally manufactured battery, atomizer, or cartridge. Mods are generally used by avid e-smokers looking to increase vapor production, battery life, or ease of use.

Personal Vaporizer (PV): Personal Vaporizer is another term for an electronic cigarette. The electronic cigarette uses an atomizer to vaporize the liquid needed to create a vapor for inhalation and exhalation.

Propylene Glycol (PG): Propylene Glycol is used as a base carrier for the nicotine and flavoring.  Propylene Glycol has been deemed generally safe to be used in medical products as well as food products for general consumption.  Some people have reported having an allergic reaction to PG.  These people also find that they have issues with certain brands of toothpaste, lotions, soaps, and medicines containing PG.  If you have issues with PG, it is suggested you look into using a product with a Vegetable Glycerin base.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG): Vegetable Glycerin is an alternative to Propylene Glycol and is sometimes used as the majority base in the E-Liquid. Vegetable Glycerin comes from the production of palm or coconut oils and is suitable to be used in sweeteners and in skin care products.

Throat Hit: Throat hit is the sensation that is felt in the back of the throat when the inhalation is taken from the mouth down the throat. There are several factors in throat hit, and like taste, is totally subjective. Some of the factors to throat hit are nicotine level, purity or quality of the E-Liquid, personal smoking habits or techniques, and the proper usage and care of your hardware.  The factor that varies throat hit the most is in the nicotine level.  Higher nicotine levels typically lend to stronger throat hit.

Vaping: An alternative word for eSmoking.  As the electronic cigarette utilizes vaporization instead of combustion and creates a vapor instead of smoke, many electronic cigarette users have coined themselves as “Vapers” or participating in “Vaping” vs. “Smoking”.

Wick: The wick is poly batting that looks like cotton and is stuffed into the cartridge section of a cartomizer, which is housed in the mouthpiece. The wick is what holds the e-Liquid that is to be vaporized by the atomizer.

USB Charger: Device that the battery plugs into to charge the battery.  USB chargers can be connected to your computer USB port, a USB car charger, and/or a USB wall charger adapter.  Most chargers have a light that when plugged in is green, blue, or red.  When the battery is screwed in and charging begins, the light will turn red. When the battery is charged, the light will turn back to green or blue.  Typical charging times range between 1 and 2.5 hours.

Wall Charger Adapter: AC plug that is inserted into a wall outlet and has a USB port.  Most of these have a red indicator light that illuminates when plugged into an outlet. The light on the USB charger will change color, letting you know your battery is fully charged.
